No, it is not 1860 again.
But with all the talk of the 10th Amendment, nullification and interposition, states rights and secession -- following Gov. Rick Perry's misstatement that Texas, on entering the Union in 1845, reserved in its constitution a right to secede -- one might think so.

Patrick Buchanan, unlike so many other Republican, and right-wing, establishment figures, seems to "get it", in this article. He points out numerous of founders. who were boldly, and defiantly, States Rights' apologists. And neatly links one event after the next, in pointing out, that it is NOT un-American, for We the People, to chafe against the over exertion of Federal Government control, to the detriment of one state, or region, or group. The mainstream Media call us, "Teabaggers", "Birthers", "Tenthers", and many other epithets, in an attempt to marginalize, and denigrate, a thought process, and reaction, that has existed throughout American history. It is not only our RIGHT, but it is also our DUTY, that whenever the weight of the Federal Government becomes too burdensome, to stand up, and resist tyranny, and DEMOCRACY, (which is the GREATEST THREAT to our Constitutional Representative Republic form of Government!)Mr. Buchanan cites many issues as leading to the spark that gave birth to the Tea Party Movement, but, as he points out, there are many, and no one issue is the true catalyst. And, it doesn't really matter what the spark is, or was. What matters, is that the Tea Party, in all of it's various incarnations, has awakened the general population to an extent that I have not seen in my adult life. Average people, who have NEVER been involved in a protest, are showing up, and volunteering, and going to the polls in increasing numbers. We have figured out that we don't have any direct power over the elitists, who ignore us, or mock us, while continuing to increase the debt burden, and infringe upon our personal liberties. But, we CAN and WILL, remove them from power, and replace them with people who think like we do.The accelerated erosion of our rights and freedoms, has triggered a popular uprising, that will lead to revolution! However, one of the Great things about America, is that we can have a "peaceful coup", every couple of years, and throw out the scum, and start over!
"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical," wrote Thomas Jefferson.
